Join me for an inspiring two-day masterclass exploring the expressive possibilities of free machine embroidery.

Often described as "drawing with thread", free machine embroidery allows you to use a sewing machine as a creative drawing tool, creating richly textured lines, marks and stitched imagery. Whether you're a textile artist, maker, illustrator, embroiderer or complete beginner, this workshop will introduce an exciting and versatile technique that can transform the way you approach surface design.

Over two days, you'll learn how to:

• Set up and control a sewing machine for free-motion stitching

• Draw with thread to create expressive lines and marks

• Build texture, detail and layers using stitch

• Translate drawings and observations into stitched artwork

• Explore techniques developed through Dionne's professional artistic practice

• Create a series of experimental stitch samples and work towards a finished textile piece

No previous machine embroidery experience is required. The workshop is designed for curious beginners as well as creatives wishing to expand their skills and explore new approaches to textile art.

Held at the historic Galea's Art Studio & Gallery.

Founded in 1920, Galea's has been part of Valletta's cultural life for over a century. The studio and gallery provide an inspiring creative environment in the heart of Malta's capital city, hosting exhibitions, workshops and artistic events throughout the year.

Cost

€200 per person upon booking you will be invoiced for the full amount to secure your place

Accommodation & Travel

Valletta is well served by affordable flights from across Europe, making this an ideal creative getaway in the Mediterranean.

October offers warm days, pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists, providing the perfect environment for combining creative learning with exploration of the island.

Accommodation is not included, but recommendations can be provided for participants travelling from overseas.

About Dionne Swift

Dionne Swift is a professional artist and educator whose work is inspired by landscape, walking, memory and place. With many years of teaching experience, she is known for creating welcoming, encouraging workshops that help participants develop both technical skills and creative confidence.

This masterclass offers a rare opportunity to learn free machine embroidery in Malta with an experienced practising artist and to discover the creative potential of drawing with thread.
