RED — textile works

The RED collection uses a deliberately limited palette and a small, carefully chosen group of textiles. Working within these constraints has brought a renewed sensitivity to the materials themselves and to their inherent qualities.

Each piece is sold framed in a neutral box frame,

30 × 30 cm (external measurement 33 × 33 cm).

20% of proceeds are donated to The Childhood Tumour Trust.

Collaging and combining these cloths, I reference a range of lived moments — personal, inherited, and observed.

The act of stitching carries memory. How we stitch. How we were taught to stitch. My grandmother taught me to sew on her old treadle machine, starting me — ambitiously — with a complex Vogue pattern. She showed me French seams and bound buttonholes. Over the years I’ve absorbed more and more knowledge, yet it never feels complete. When I listen carefully, the fabric itself always leads the way.

Layers and transparency, lines that fall slightly out of register, patterns that don’t quite align, dots that refuse to meet — these become metaphors for life. Certain moments, physical or emotional, large or small, can jar and halt us in our tracks. They may unsettle us, but they can also create depth and unexpected new patterns.

Cotton organdie is an eloquent and sophisticated cloth — crisp, clear, and deceptively sharp. Alongside it, wool offers a soft, protective counterpoint. Fabrics, like people, are chosen for how they feel against us. We gravitate toward what offers comfort, resistance, or shelter at different times.

Red has long been a colour through which I release thought and emotion. I once assumed it spoke only of anger, but I now understand it as a means of release — a way to dissolve frustration and arrive at clarity, often with a smile. Recently, while rewatching Riot Women, the colour red suddenly made complete sense.

The surrounding landscape also feeds this work. Its patterns, shadows, forms, and rhythms quietly inform my compositions, often unconsciously, shaping how each piece comes together eacheach piece comes together.
